MauiTime 13.16 – The Redesign

I’m really excited to share with you the new redesign of Maui Time Weekly. I’ve been here at MTW for about 7 weeks now, and have been helping with many changes. The first change was a company-wide change from Quark 6 to Indesign CS4. This means multiple software installs and troubleshooting, entire old template rebuilds, overcoming printing adjustments and problems, and font issues. After transitioning the publication over to Indesign in the original design, we went with an entirely new design. This was weeks in the planning and preparation, and entirely done by yours truly. We’re working on rolling out multiple blogs, an updated website as well as new online software and content—so this new look and feel for the print needed to be able to mold into the world of web rather seamlessly. The idea of the new masthead is that the established brand is pretty well-known here on the island, but needs to be prepared for the future of the online market. The all-under case font is ready to be easily adapted into “.com” and web presence, as well as modified for multiple blog titles and more.

As for the design, that was restructured from the ground-up. New colors, new fonts, new structure, similar format and all-around cleanup. It’s still a bit of a work-in-progress, as all things are, but I think this redesign has really hit the mark for this market. Modern, clean with a splash of trendy keep this new read vibrant, young and ready for the future.

Here is an example of what they were doing before I arrived. Here is where you will find the new look I designed.

I’m pretty stoked with where we’re headed, and I want to give a big “thanks” to all my colleagues. Our editor, Jacob Shafer has been an amazing help and resource through this process—as well as our publisher Tommy Russo who is a never-ending bank of knowledge when it comes to this industry and technology. Oh, and Sean Hower for the great photos—every good designer knows he’s nothing without great photography!  Be sure to leave a comment and let me know what you think.
