Maui Time Weekly 13.14

Hi Folks, here is the new cover for the September 24th issue of Maui Time Weekly. The feature was about Keiki Care, a state-run healthcare program that was initiated for “gap kids,” whose parents were to wealthy to receive Medicare but too poor to afford private insurance. The program didn’t last long, and was shut down a couple years ago, but with the recent National Healthcare talk many news outlets (mainly right-wing) have been picking up the story of Keiki Care and using it as proof that National Healthcare doesn’t work. But did it really fail?

I was at a bit of a mental roadblock in coming up for a cover design for this topic, but think that it really turned out well. I was trying to avoid stock art of a child or a doctor or anything like that due to the “cheese factor.” The bright red, the healthcare cross made of gauze and the child silhouette really work well together to create tension and surprise. Hopefully people pick up the hidden meaning.

Be sure to read more of the article from our Editor Jacob Shafer here.
