Pele Award Winner
This past Saturday it was announced that I won an Award of Merit at this year’s Pele Awards—Hawaii’s AAF Divisional Advertising Awards Competition—for my cover of “The Seven Scariest County and State Elected Officials” Halloween cover. This was the first time that MauiTime had ever been entered into the competition, and we only entered one cover into the publication design category for best cover. I was told from the AAF representative that this is a real honor because less than 25% of the entries into the contest place, and out of that 25% the publication categories are the largest and most competitive. So although I was gunning for a gold, I’m still pretty happy with our accomplishment. Going 1-for-1 in my first attempt at the local Addys competition is pretty exciting—and considering I only had 4 months of covers to choose from—that made it extra special. I’ll be excited to see what we can do next year with a whole years worth of covers to choose from! The part that I find the most entertaining about this win is that this was far and away our most controversial cover of the year here locally, and caused quite a stir when it came out. Ironic that this same cover would be an award-winning piece locally just a few months later.
Special thanks to illustrator Len Peralta, if it weren’t for his amazing artistic abilities this cover would never had come out so good. Thanks Len!
